Charlton Water and Sewer Commission Approves 20 Percent Rate Hike

Charlton Water and Sewer Commission raises sewer rates 20 percent and sets a new $12,000 tie-in fee. The five-member board, chaired by Robert Coleman, voted unanimously to move $1 million in sewer and $400,000 in water retained earnings into stabilization funds ahead of October's Special Town Meeting. Veolia representative Shane told the commission the treatment plant remains in violation but is improving, saying "we want to be in compliance just as bad as the town wants to be." Commissioners learned the plant has violated its discharge permit for 11 consecutive quarters and authorized engineering consultant Chris of McClure Engineering to prepare a DEP compliance timeline.
The board also approved a $25,000 capital article for office renovations, appointed Jennifer Kornoyer as administrative coordinator, and set the new sewer rates to take effect with January 2027 billing.
