Charlton Select Board agrees to debate Flock license plate cameras, zeroes out death certificate fees. Resident Michelle Chalmers presented roughly 160 signatures on each of two citizen petitions targeting the Charlton Police Department's Flock camera system, telling the board "the public has a right to basic information about how government surveillance operates"; the item goes to the board's September 22 meeting. A board member's motion eliminated the town's $5 death certificate fee outright, arguing the town should stop "nickel-and-diming people" during difficult times, while a proposed fee exemption for senior and veteran dog owners was held as a warrant placeholder pending town counsel's opinion.
The board also declined to exercise its right of first refusal on 2.47 acres of Chapter 61B land on Gould Road owned by St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church. Separately, the Senior Community Center Feasibility Committee, chaired by Pat Stockwell, reported the asking price for the former Charlton Furniture site has fallen to $1.6 million from $1.8 million, with the full purchase-and-renovation project estimated near $13.7 million and a decision on the October 19 Special Town Meeting warrant expected September 22.
