Charlton Panel Reviews $14 Million Senior Center Proposal

Charlton capital panel weighs a $14 million senior center and looming school costs. Senior Community Center Feasibility Committee Chair Pat Stocklow presented a plan to convert the former Charlton Furniture building on Dresser Hill Road into a new senior center, with a recent quote putting purchase and renovation costs at $1.8 million and $11.6 million, against an original $14 million estimate and a projected $251 average annual tax impact. Members also learned the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District will bring an $11.1 million capital project, $6.1 million of it assessed to Charlton, to a district-wide ballot vote around September 29.
The town separately owes the state $210,000 to resolve a lapsed farming-compliance requirement at Fay Mountain Farm. No capital spending votes were taken; the town's free cash figure won't be certified until closer to September 30.
