Finance Panel Backs $500K Senior Center Study
Other Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026
Charlton Finance Committee backs $500,000 senior center design study, drops parking lot project to pay for it. The panel unanimously supported Article 5 of the draft October 19 Special Town Meeting warrant after certifying $2.8 million in free cash, within 1 percent of last year's total. To fund the study, officials cut a planned $75,000 police parking lot repaving and trimmed a stabilization transfer from $550,000 to $150,000.
Member Jamie said, "I don't want to be the one responsible for making the decision that somebody can afford a new building." Officials also flagged a September 29 district ballot vote on an roughly $11 million school borrowing that could cost Charlton about $6 million regardless of local turnout, and deferred new fire inspector and police lieutenant hiring requests to the fiscal 2028 budget cycle.
