Charlton Conservation Commission Closes Flint Road Landfill Hearing After Decades of Delays

CHARLTON — May 28, 2025 — Charlton Conservation Commission approves landfill capping order and hears that town farm manager is leaving. The commission, meeting May 28 with temporary chair Mitch Dunn presiding in the absence of the chair, vice chair, and clerk, voted unanimously to close the public hearing and issue an order of conditions for the capping of the long-uncapped municipal landfill at 54 Flint Road, a six-to-seven-acre site the town stopped using in the late 1970s. Gary Magnuson of CMG Environmental told the commission that PFAS contamination has been detected in roughly 20 homes on Burlingame Road, with two homes on Old Town Road and Dresser Hill Road already fitted with drinking water treatment systems paid for by the town through the Board of Health. The project, approved by DEP's Division of Solid Waste and the Central Regional Office, is expected to go to public bid within two months and begin construction this fall, with completion in one to one and a half years. The commission also closed hearings for a single-family home on Lot 1 at Sandersdale Road and for 19 Dresser Hill Road, and continued six other applications to June 18. Conservation Administrator Rose Conway informed the board that the manager of Faye Mountain Farm, identified as Neil, "will not be renewing the contract" — leaving the town to advertise for a new farm manager with a committee that has never formally met.
