Charlton Board of Health Hears Recycling Gains, Flags Rodent and Mosquito Risks

CHARLTON — September 16, 2025 — Charlton Board of Health fields recycling update and public health warnings at September meeting. The board, chaired by Matt Gagner and joined by Vice Chair Steve Zavasko and Member John Sanborn by phone, heard that the town's DEP Recycling Incentive Program is on pace to yield approximately $6,500 this fiscal year, nearly double the prior year's grant, boosted by participation in the Pay As You Throw program at the Spencer transfer station. Health Director Jim warned of a growing rat infestation tied to backyard chicken coops and deteriorating dumpsters, urged residents to keep lids sealed and feed secured, and reminded the public to use EPA-registered repellents against mosquitoes amid active West Nile virus detections in Sturbridge and neighboring communities. A flu clinic is set for September 23 at the senior center, open to all residents at no direct cost. The board tentatively set its next meeting for October 7 to await a consultant's review of Flint Road Landfill bids opened September 18, while noting that a $3,000 budget line could be applied toward a proposed Household Hazardous Waste Day in North Brookfield if negotiations succeed.
